Beyond skills: Why story will define survival in the AI age

Across universities worldwide, a quiet yet consequential shift is underway. Students are submitting AI-assisted essays, faculty are redesigning assessments in real time, and institutions are issuing guidelines faster than they can stabilise them.

Amid this turbulence, a striking idea has begun to circulate: in the age of AI, those who survive are those with a story to tell.

This is not a passing observation. It signals an inflection point – not simply a moment of change but a shift in how value is defined. What is emerging is not just a new set of tools but a new basis for differentiation: not what individuals can do but how they organise meaning over time.

For more than a century, higher education has been organised around a relatively stable assumption – that students acquire knowledge and skills that are then translated into economic and social mobility. The system has been calibrated to reward accumulation: information, credentials, and demonstrable competencies.

That assumption is now collapsing.

What is collapsing is not just an educational model but also a deeper illusion: that human value could be stabilised through the accumulation of knowledge and skills. For decades, we have mistaken competence for identity and output for meaning.

Artificial intelligence does not simply disrupt this model – it exposes its limitations. The problem is not that machines are becoming more capable but that our definition of capability has always been incomplete.

The emergence of large-scale AI systems such as ChatGPT does more than enhance productivity; it is restructuring the very conditions under which knowledge becomes scarce.

Tasks that once signalled expertise – writing, summarising, coding, and even forms of creative production – are now executable at scale, on demand and at negligible marginal cost. What is being displaced is not merely labour. It is the illusion that labour has ever defined us.

To grasp the depth of this shift, we must start with a simple question: what happens when skills are no longer scarce? This question reveals a deeper transformation already underway.

When skills are no longer scarce

The dominant policy response to AI in education has been predictable: more digital skills, more AI literacy, and more technical training. While necessary, this response is insufficient because it misreads the nature of the shift.

We are not merely entering a more advanced knowledge economy. We are entering a state of cognitive abundance.

When knowledge becomes abundant, information loses its scarcity value, technical execution becomes increasingly automatable, and competence alone no longer differentiates. In such an environment, the critical question is no longer ‘What can you do?’ but rather ‘What does your work mean, and why does it matter?’

This is where ‘having a story’ becomes more than a metaphor – it becomes a structural form of differentiation.

Early signs of this transformation are already evident. Universities in Australia and the United Kingdom have begun redesigning assessment formats to incorporate reflective and process-orientated components alongside AI-assisted outputs.

In Finland, curricular reforms increasingly prioritise transversal competencies – interpretation, judgement and ethical reasoning – over discrete technical mastery.

This shift is increasingly reflected in international policy discussions, where organisations such as the OECD and UNESCO emphasise human-centred, ethical and interpretive capacities as essential for the AI era.

If skills no longer differentiate, then something else must – and that ‘something’ is no longer technical.

What it means to ‘have a story’

A story is not simply what differentiates individuals in the age of AI; it reveals something more unsettling – that what we once took to be differentiation was never sufficient to define human value. To understand this, we must first confront a common misconception.

The notion of ‘self-story’ is often reduced to personal branding, a category error. A genuine narrative is not a marketing device; it is a form of epistemic organisation.

To have a story is to possess coherence over time – the capacity to connect past experiences, present actions, and future intentions into a meaningful trajectory. It requires situated experience: an understanding that knowledge is always embedded in social, cultural and embodied contexts, a point long emphasised in phenomenology.

It also demands interpretive agency – the ability to assign meaning to events rather than merely processing information about them.

In this sense, a story is not something one tells after the fact; it is the structure through which a life becomes intelligible in the first place.

AI systems can simulate the appearance of thought, but they do not inhabit the conditions in which thought acquires consequence. They do not carry stakes, nor do they experience continuity. Human narrative, therefore, becomes the site where meaning is constructed, contested and sustained.

From knowledge production to meaning construction

This inflection point has profound implications for universities. Institutions designed for an earlier logic of scarcity now face the challenge of operating in an abundance-driven landscape.

Historically, universities have served as institutions for the production and transmission of knowledge. In the AI era, they must fundamentally reorient toward meaning construction and narrative formation.

This does not imply abandoning rigour or disciplinary knowledge. Rather, it requires reconfiguring how knowledge is taught, assessed and integrated into a student’s intellectual identity.

At present, most curricula remain structurally fragmented – modular courses, discrete learning outcomes, and output-focused assessments. Students graduate with accumulated competencies but often lack a coherent sense of how these elements form a meaningful whole.

In an age when AI can reproduce outputs, such fragmentation is no longer a minor inefficiency but a structural liability.

The risk of the ‘storyless graduate’

If universities fail to adapt, they risk producing what might be called the storyless graduate: technically capable and credential-rich, yet unable to articulate purpose, direction or meaning.

Such graduates are particularly vulnerable in an AI-mediated labour market, where employers increasingly seek not only skill execution but also judgement, contextual reasoning and narrative coherence.

Put more starkly: if a student’s value can be reduced to a set of replicable outputs, that value is likely to be replicated.

The uncomfortable implication is this: universities that continue to prioritise output over meaning may inadvertently accelerate the very obsolescence they seek to resist.

At the global level, this raises a deeper concern: systems that fail to cultivate meaning may not simply fall behind – they may produce generations equipped to operate systems but not to question or reshape them.

Reimagining the university: Three structural shifts

To respond effectively at this inflection point, universities must move beyond incremental reform and undertake structural recalibration. These are not incremental adjustments but structural responses to a system whose underlying logic has already shifted.

Assessment can no longer remain anchored in final outputs without becoming obsolete. It must evolve to evaluate how students engage with AI systems, how they make decisions under uncertainty, and how they interpret and contextualise generated outputs.

Curricula must move from fragmentation towards narrative integration. Programmes should be designed to help students construct longitudinal intellectual trajectories through reflective portfolios, integrative capstone experiences, and structured opportunities to connect disciplinary knowledge with personal direction.

Pedagogy must shift from information delivery to meaning-making. Teaching can no longer be defined primarily by transmission; it must prioritise dialogue, interpretation and inquiry. Educators become facilitators of meaning-making in hybrid human-AI environments.

This shift will not happen automatically; it requires deliberate leadership from universities, policymakers and educators who are willing to rethink the purpose of higher education.

The emerging economy of interpretation

What is unfolding is not merely a technological transition but a civilisational one.

We are moving from an economy of production to an economy of interpretation. In this emerging landscape, AI generates possibilities, but humans assign significance.

This inflection point marks the transition from systems organised around production to those organised around interpretation.

The individuals who will lead are not those who know the most but those who can situate knowledge within a coherent and compelling narrative of purpose and experience.

A final question for universities

The central challenge is not whether universities should teach students to use AI. That is already assumed. The deeper question is this: Can universities still help students become authors of their intellectual and moral development?

If the answer is yes, higher education remains indispensable. If not, it risks becoming an increasingly efficient system for producing outputs that machines can already produce.

For universities, the implication is immediate: curricula, assessment and pedagogy must no longer be designed solely to produce competent graduates but to cultivate individuals capable of interpreting, connecting and making sense of what they know.

In the age of AI, the decisive divide will not be between those who use machines and those who do not but between those who can be reduced to mere outputs and those who cannot.

Beyond employability: The question of human formation

What is ultimately at stake is not merely employability but the formation of the human subject in an AI-mediated world. The question is no longer whether education leads to employment but whether it preserves authorship in a system increasingly capable of writing on our behalf.

For much of modern higher education, the implicit goal has been alignment – aligning students with labour market needs, institutional expectations and disciplinary standards. Yet alignment, in an age of intelligent systems, risks becoming a form of quiet erasure.

The danger is not that AI will replace human beings outright but that it will render certain forms of human development obsolete – especially those grounded in repetition, compliance and narrow technical execution.

A story, by contrast, resists optimisation. It introduces ambiguity, contradiction and irreducibility. It insists that life cannot be fully specified in advance or entirely predicted by data. It preserves the possibility of deviation – of choosing differently, interpreting differently, becoming otherwise.

To educate, therefore, is not simply to equip students to navigate systems but to ensure they are not entirely defined by them.

The irreducible margin

There will always remain a margin that cannot be automated: the space where experience exceeds data, where judgement exceeds calculation, and where meaning exceeds output.

The task of higher education is to protect, expand and legitimise that margin. Because it is precisely there – in that irreducible space – that a human life becomes a story, rather than a sequence of optimised outputs.
