PTKI Sustainability Push

UI GreenMetric Advocates for Sustainable Campus Transformation within Indonesia’s Islamic Higher Education Network

On April 22, 2026, UI GreenMetric reaffirmed its commitment to expanding sustainable practices across diverse higher education systems by participating in a dedicated information session for Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam (PTKI). Held under the auspices of the Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia (Kemenag), the session served as a strategic platform to introduce sustainability frameworks and encourage Islamic higher education institutions to actively engage in global sustainability rankings.

The event was marked by a significant endorsement from Prof. Dr. Phil. Sahiron Syamsuddin, M.A., who highlighted the critical synergy between institutional management and the ministry's latest educational paradigms. In his opening remarks, Prof. Sahiron emphasized that the push for sustainability is deeply rooted in Ecotheology, a theological approach that frames environmental preservation as a spiritual mandate. He further connected this to the Kurikulum Berbasis Cinta (KBC) or Curricula Based on Love, launched by Kemenag in 2025, particularly the "Panca Cinta" (Five Loves) principle. Prof. Sahiron underscored that the "Cinta Lingkungan" (Love for the Environment) aspect of the curriculum provides the moral foundation, while UI GreenMetric serves as the essential catalyst to translate these spiritual values into measurable, systemic actions within the madrasah and university ecosystem. A central highlight of the session was a keynote presentation delivered by Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Director of UI GreenMetric. In his remarks, Dr. Juwono outlined how sustainability rankings function as both evaluative and transformative tools. He emphasized that the UI GreenMetric framework enables universities to systematically assess their environmental performance while providing a structured guide for strategic planning, effectively operationalizing the spirit of Ecotheology into verifiable institutional policies.

The presentation further showcased the continued global expansion of UI GreenMetric, which now encompasses over 1,745 universities across 105 countries. This growth reflects an international shift toward embedding sustainability into the core of higher education governance. Within this context, Indonesian institutions, particularly PTKI, are increasingly positioned to contribute to and benefit from this global knowledge-sharing network. Dr. Juwono elaborated on the key assessment indicators, including Energy and Climate Change, Transportation, and Waste Management, which offer a comprehensive structure for universities seeking to align their "Cinta Lingkungan" objectives with global environmental goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The session concluded by reinforcing the importance of contextualizing sustainability within the specific values of PTKI institutions. By integrating Islamic environmental ethics and the Kurikulum Berbasis Cinta, these universities are uniquely positioned to foster a holistic approach that bridges scientific innovation with spiritual responsibility. Through this engagement, UI GreenMetric continues to strengthen its collaboration with Kemenag and Prof. Sahiron’s network, positioning PTKI institutions as moral and practical leaders in the global movement toward a more sustainable future.
